the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art (SVMA) will host a lecture by art historian Ann Wiklund entitled, “Rauschenberg and Johns: Breaking Boundaries.” Wiklund’s lecture will focus on the current exhibition, highlighting works by Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns, that is comprised of prints, monotypes, and paintings, representing a transitional period in post-World War II American art. “The two artists who clearly redefined the boundaries of art in the 1950’s and 1960’s were Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns,” states Wiklund. Ground breaking for their time, “Theirs is a unique tale of collaboration and sharing of ideas in utterly new and profound ways. From Rauschenberg’s stuffed angora goat to Johns’ American flags and targets, the art world would never the same.” On October 10th, Wiklund will, “celebrate their lives and legacies,” as well as touch on other influential artists in the exhibition including Roy Lichtenstein, Claus Oldenburg, and Wayne Thiebald. Major influences of both Rauschenberg and Johns, the composer John Cage and choreographer Merce Cunningham, will also be major components of the lecture. “From Abstract Expressionism to Pop Art: Johns, Rauschenberg, and the Aesthetic of Indifference” is currently on exhibit at SVMA through October 19th. The more than 42 pieces in the exhibition are on loan from the Anderson Collection and the Anderson Graphic Art Collection, which were gifted to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF). Ann Wiklund holds a bachelor’s degree from Tulane University and a master’s degree from the University of Kansas, both in art history. She has taught the subject for more than 25 years and led numerous study programs on European art and architecture in Florence and Paris. Besides lecturing at SVMA, she teaches part-time and also lectures at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Mo. Advance tickets to the lecture at SVMA are $10 for museum members, and $15 for non-members. To make reservations call the museum at 707-939-7862 or write
