Mike Henderson makes expressive, gestural abstract paintings that, like the blues and jazz music he also creates, fully engage viewers both physically and intellectually. Working both with and beyond the tradition of Abstract Expressionism, Henderson improvises with oil paint in a visual equivalent to the musical improvisations he crafts with his guitar. Henderson has stated that he thinks of his work as congruencies of time and sound as well as space and color: “Ultimately, I would like each painting to be a question rather than an answer—the inner space of the painting as the take-off point for a corresponding inner journey with the viewer.” Born in Missouri in 1943, Henderson received his BFA (1969) and MFA (1970) from the San Francisco Art Institute. He has been on the art studio faculty of the University of California, Davis, since 1970 and is represented in the di Rosa Preserve collection along with public and private collections throughout the United States.
