Special Screening of the Movie 'Merlove'

Saturday, February 07 2009, 5:30pm - 8:00pm
After the movie Sideways came out the world seemed to rally behind the notion that Merlot wine is somehow inferior to other varietals. Who can forget the movie’s main character Miles, and his steadfast refusal to drink Merlot, even tough it meant offending a potential suitor? Many people seem to have bought into the idea that enjoying a glass of Merlot wine is like announcing to the world “I have bad taste!” Not so, say Rudy McClain and Marisol Ramirez, director and associate producer, respectively, of the independent movie Merlove.

McClain and Ramirez’s original aim was to debunk the myth surrounding the under-appreciated Merlot grape by making a film in response to Sideways. Armed only with a fierce love for Merlot, the couple, who have lived in Sonoma for the last three and a half years, set out to do some research. “I just went to winemakers and asked ‘What’s the deal with Merlot’” explains McClain. “I discovered that there are some universals when it comes to wine and how it connects to money, spirit, and pop-culture.” The couple distilled over 200 hours of film taken during almost 50 individual interviews into a feature-length film. One of the movie’s main characters is an animated bottle of Merlot wine named Merlove, who is forced to find meaning in life when he is tossed into a sea of mediocre wine.

Merlove will screen for the first time in Sonoma at 7:00pm, Doors will open at 5:30pm and guests are invited to come early and enjoy a chocolate reception provided by local chocolatiers Denny Lane and Rachna Sachasihn of Chaac Mol Chocolate.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with McCain and Ramirez.
