For the last six months, the General Joseph Hooker House (previously the Vasquez House) has been undergoing a major facelift with the help of a dedicated group of members from the Sonoma League for Historic Preservation. “We are very pleased to be able to give this wonderful old house a sprucing up,” says League member, Ginny Richardson. “We have been able to do some much-needed repairs using League funds, and it’s very satisfying to see the house looking so good,” states Paul Vierya. The original hardwood floors have been refinished. The walls have been repainted. The counter in the kitchen has been removed to create more exhibit space.
General Joseph Hooker House will serve as a museum showing the importance of Sonoma in California history through a series of rotating photo exhibits and a permanently-installed timeline. The first photographic exhibit will feature General Hooker and the Plaza area in the 1850s and 1860s. New signs in the front of the house and at the entrance to El Paseo welcome all to visit the charming property and its new museum devoted to the importance of Sonoma in California history.
