Environmental Film Festival at the Boys & Girls Club

From Thursday, July 15 2010
To Thursday, July 29 2010
6:30pm - 8:00pm Thursday of each week
The Maxwell Farms Regional Park Stewardship and Sonoma Ecology Center are sponsors of the inaugural environmental film festival, bringing eco-conscious documentaries to Sonoma on a weekly basis taking place every Thursday during July, beginning this week, at 6:30 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club. There is no charge to attend.

On July 15, attendees can see "Fish Passage Success Stories," which illustrates the history of the fish passage program in California, case studies and past and current achievements, and offers unique underwater images and clips of salmon leaping into culverts. The guest speaker will be Will Pier, fish passage and riparian consultant for the Salmonid Restoration Federation board.

On July 22, see "River of Renewal," documents how polarized stakeholders and government agencies overcome bitter division and reach a consensus about the future that could bring the largest dam removal/river restoration project in history. David Leland, environmental engineer for the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control board, will be the guest speaker.

On July 29, "A Simple Question: The Story of STRAW" will be shown, telling the story of the Bay Institute's STRAW project (Students and Teachers Restoring A Watershed) starting from its origins in 1992 as a fourth grade class-project into a remarkable program that has restored over 20 miles of habitat in Marin County's Stemple Creek Watershed. The guest speakers will be Laurette Rogers, watershed education director with the Bay Institute; and Kevin White, the filmmaker behind the documentary.

These free screenings will take place at the Boys & Girls Club Maxwell Park clubhouse at 100 Verano Ave., in Sonoma. Documentaries are appropriate for teens and up. The Boys & Girls Clubs will provide complimentary popcorn; attendees should bring their own beverage.

The parking fee at the club is $6.
