Mother’s Day is not just about giving Mom the day off from her daily family contributions, but to also celebrate her for all that she does to keep the family together. Whether you choose to gift her an object, an experience, or quality time together, you’re sure to make an impression when you celebrate her big day with her in Sonoma Valley.

There’s always a ton of fun things to do for Mother’s Day, from garden brunches and wine tastings to spa days and picnics. We’ve put together a few ideas to help you find something that she’s sure to appreciate. Whatever option you choose, just make sure Mom doesn’t have to work hard in order to enjoy it!

Stroll Sonoma Botanical Garden & Have a Picnic

Stopping to smell the roses isn’t something that most mothers have time to do. Between caring for the family and balancing her own career and needs, she may be more focused on doing-doing-doing rather than taking some down town. If you’re on a budget, there’s no better way to spend the day than a stroll through Sonoma Botanical Garden, located on Highway 12 in Glen Ellen. With an incredible array of flora from Asia, you’ll be transported to another world with beautiful flowers and trees in bloom. Bring along a picnic and set up on one of their many picnic tables nestled in various nooks throughout the park. It’s a magical day she won’t forget!

Make Brunch Reservations at a Restaurant or Winery

Many of Sonoma Valley’s restaurants and wineries offer Mother’s Day events, including brunches and tea parties. Take a look at our calendar of events or the link above to see what’s happening during your stay. As the birthplace of the farm-to-table movement, you can be assured of the finest ingredients and seasonal produce, not to mention outstanding wines! Whatever option you decide on, consider whether Mom would prefer a sunny patio or the cool, shady indoors. Then be sure to make a reservation well in advance to make sure all the family members who want to come can join you.

Gift Mom a Day of Wellness

Sonoma Valley’s spa and wellness offerings are as luxurious as they are abundant. And there’s nothing that Mom deserves more than some well-needed TLC. Book an entire day experience for mom, preferably for her alone or with a close friend, or gift her a treatment or yoga package to experience while she’s visiting the valley. You can also find top-notch treatments at The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn (which includes access to their thermal pools), The MacArthur Place Hotel & Spa, Kenwood Inn & Spa, and The Lodge at Sonoma, where Mom is sure to feel like the queen she is. If your mom is a yogi or wants to start a practice, buy a package at Sonoma Yoga, where she can take a a gentle, restorative class or an expert level Ashtanga class—and everything in between!

Enjoy a Family Hike or Bike Ride

There’s nothing like spending a day in Mother Nature to tell Mom you love her. Sonoma Valley’s extensive state and regional parks offer hundreds of miles of trails to explore, for whatever fitness level you’re catering to. Take an easy but invigorating hike up the Overlook Trail for easy access to downtown Sonoma; opt for a cultural experience at Jack London State Historic Park, where you can hike and visit the House of Happy Walls and the author’s cottage; or go big and reserve a glamping tent for Mom at Sugarloaf Ridge State Park and make a weekend of it. If Mom is more of a cyclist, consider renting bikes for the family at Sonoma Adventures or Wine Country Cyclery and cruise through quiet vineyard roads.
