The story so far.
In 1993, local school teacher, artist, and former Sonoma Lord Mayor, Larry Murphy, along with his late wife Rose, bought Ma Stokled’s pub in the heart of Sonoma and renamed it Murphy’s Irish Pub and Restaurant.
The “pub”, as it became known, was a haven for ex-pats from the UK and Ireland.
In 1999, Larry and Rose relocated to a much larger premises just across the alley. The new location had a full kitchen, and an additional room. The additional room was converted for music and seasonal plays. Many Irish themed plays have been enacted over the years in the room. It soon became known as The Snug.
The Murphy’s decided to call it a day in 2007, and Larry’s good friends Bob Smith, and Bill Pollock took the reins. The new owners carried the same business model, keeping most of the same staff, including an ambitious young local man, Hunt Bailie. Hunt would become their general manager, and lead by example for another 6yrs, before opening his own business interests, Sonoma Adventures.
During their tenure, Bob and Bill would dedicate the Snug as the Rose Murphy Center for Performing Arts, in honor of Roses commitment to stage and theatre.
In late 2017, Bob and Bill felt it was time to give someone new an opportunity to carry on Murphy's legacy. Murphy's in Sonoma drew a lot of prospective buyers and soon enough Bob and Bill were happy to announce they had found a group of local Irish gentlemen who they felt could continue the vision Larry Murphy started and they had continued. The new owners included brothers Dermot and Tom Coll, 23yr owners of the Abbey Tavern in San Francisco and Tom’s business partner Richie Hart, all Sonoma locals.
A small remodel of the pub preceded the reopening which included giving Murphy’s a more gastro pub feel and a revamp of the menu.
To revamp the menu, the partners invited Dermot’s father in law, Chef Daniel Martes, who had recently retired from launching successful and neighborhood-oriented restaurants, including the Garibaldi’s franchises in the Bay Area, on board.
Chef Daniel created a menu that had the typical Irish pub faire in mind, but with a little attitude!!
Chef Daniel’s main objective of the kitchen is to serve innovative twists on classic Irish pub fare that stress quality and freshness with every recipe, and every ingredient. The menu items draw from both national and international cooking traditions and remain in harmony with the seasonal availability of high-quality ingredients coming from locally sourced ingredients.
The latest updates to Murphy’s were created to serve the Town of Sonoma and the Valley for many years to come.
The partners have great plans for 2021, including an additional bar area set to open Summer 2021. It will be available to rent for private events, much like the snug.
If you find yourself in Sonoma, and would like to have a cocktail, glass of wine, a small bar-bite, or a delicious dinner served on the patio, looking onto Sonoma square, drop by Murphy’s.
The pub is open for business...
