You can't live on wine alone in Sonoma. Sometimes you need a good cup of coffee to get you ready for the day of adventures, or for an afternoon break before getting back out there. With a plethora of great local roasters and hangouts, Sonoma Valley's coffee scene proves it's alive and growing! Here some good spots to find a good cup of coffee in Sonoma Valley - and espresso, café au lait and a latte, too.
SONOMA
Basque Boulangerie
This longtime downtown Sonoma bakeshop has been here forever! Known for their breads and pastries, it's also a great stop for a hit of caffeine after lunch or in between wine tastings. Stopping to sample the local scene gives you another reason to stop by--a great source of insider tips of where to visit in the Valley. Recommendation: The Beehive Cake and an espresso at their bistro tables for optimal people-watching.
Cochon Tasting Bar
Yes it's a winery. Yes it's an espresso bar. Yes it's a great place to while away an afternoon on the patio tucked behind Vine Alley. Carlo knows how to pull the perfect espresso and Jay's americanos hit the spot. When you are ready for wine try their selection of Pinot, Syrah, Chardonnay and Zinfandels. Recommendation: come for the espresso, stay for the wine. Or the other way around.
Sonoma's Best Coffee on the Plaza
Located in the historic Sonoma Cheese Factory, this sister property of Sonoma's Best features their delicious Naysayer coffee with a full coffee bar, as well as scratch-made pastries, or you can opt for mouthwatering Butcherman breakfast favorites, made from house-smoked barbecue. It's a great stop to refresh body and mind in between sightseeing and tasting on the plaza!
Sonoma's Best Deli & Coffee
On the east side of Sonoma, this sweet and unassuming mercantile has been an iconic favorite of locals and tourists for many years. Serving Naysayer coffee and a host of delicious pastries, Sonoma's Best (a sister property of Sonoma Cheese Factory) is a great spot for a quick cup of coffee and a variety of breakfast selections, or spend a languid morning in their sun-dappled garden, taking in the relaxed Sonoma vibes.
Sunflower Caffé
For a sit down experience that's sure to transport you to an atmosphere of calm and beauty, look no further than Sunflower Caffe. Best known as a healthy brunch spot, the Sunflower is just as satisfying a quick stop for a cup of coffee. Sip on a variety of delicious coffees and teas and nibble on one of their homemade pastries. Seated service is super speedy, so treat yourself to a relaxing moment, whether you opt for a quiet table on their idyllic back garden patio or an ideal people-watching spot in front of the restaurant.
The Porch at MacArthur Place Hotel & Spa
If coffee shops could be spas, The Porch would be one. Located at the entrance of the stunning MacArthur Place Hotel & Spa, it is as quiet and spacious as coffee shops get. Known among locals as a great place for 1:1 meetings or to catch up on emails, it is the perfect picture of serenity with high ceilings and beautifully curated art on the walls. Enjoy their locally made herbal teas, a matcha latte or a delicious pastry. Best of all: you don't need to be a hotel guest to be welcome.
THE SPRINGS
Baker & Cook
With sweet and savory treats of equal quality and measure, you may walk into this bakery confused at the options. This said, you can't go wrong with the coffee, sourced from a local Sonoma County roaster. Whether you decide to perch with a newspaper or guide book and take a load off or grab some java on the fly, you simply can't go wrong. Recommendation: The gluten-free donut holes and an almond milk Americano. Yum!
GLEN ELLEN
Les Pascals
A fabulous bakery in it's own right but also they have great coffee and it's a gathering spot for most of Glen Ellen. At the front is Pascal, in the bakery is Pascale. Together they are Les Pascales, the wife and husband duo who hold down the cafe and greet everyone in the morning with a hearty "Bonjour!" Recommendation: Small latte, avec un pain au chocolat. Secret: The patio out back is in the shade of a beautiful oak tree and makes for the perfect morning break.
KENWOOD
Pillowfight Coffee
Sonoma Valley's newest coffee shop is a community hit, with locals and visitors welcoming the new addition to bustling downtown Kenwood. (Ok, maybe bustling and downtown is a stretch - but Kenwood sure is quaint.) Located next to winery tasting rooms, Palooza Brewery & Gastropub and the Kenwood market, Pillowfight Coffee pays homage to the area's history for hosting the world-famous Kenwood Pillowfights. The coffee shop itself has the usual yummy coffees and pastries, but also serves as a de facto information center about the area, with visitor guides, maps and the latest issue of The Kenwood Press newspaper. Recommendation: The ginger scone, paired with a small latte. Enjoy it outside in the courtyard.
